Soft Autumn color palette at a glance
The Soft Autumn color palette is one of the most searched palettes, and it is easy to see why: it is calm, earthy and endlessly wearable. In the Closie app it lists camel, olive, taupe, terracotta, peach, sea green, ecru and mocha for near the face, with khaki, chocolate, beige and graphite further away.
Every color in the palette is softened, as if seen through a light autumn mist. Warmth is there, but it is quiet. That is the difference from True Autumn, whose colors are richer and more golden.
Soft Autumn vs Muted Autumn: same season
Some analysts call this season Muted Autumn. All of them describe the same low-contrast, warm-leaning season where softness (low chroma) matters most.
White, black and grey for a Soft Autumn
- White: ecru, oatmeal or warm off-white. Snow white looks harsh.
- Black: graphite, chocolate or olive-brown instead, especially near the face.
- Grey: warm greige and taupe rather than cool blue-grey.
- Navy: a soft, greyed navy can work in trousers; bright navy is harder.
How to wear colors outside your palette
Soft Autumns often feel they “can’t wear color”. You can — just choose the muted version of it and keep stronger colors away from your face. A black coat becomes easier with a camel scarf; a cobalt dress with an olive cardigan over it; bright white jeans with an ecru knit on top.
Hair color for Soft Autumn
Soft golden brown, beige blonde, caramel and light chestnut work well. Very ashy shades can drain your warmth, and very dark or very bright copper add more contrast or intensity than your features carry. Subtle, blended highlights look more natural on you than chunky ones.
Fabrics and patterns
Textured, matte fabrics flatter you: suede, brushed wool, cashmere, linen, corduroy, washed silk. Patterns should be blended and organic — paisley, soft plaids, tonal florals, animal prints in muted browns. High-contrast graphics overwhelm you.
Am I a Soft Autumn? Four quick checks
- Olive and camel look better on you than navy and grey.
- Black and pure white make you look tired.
- Gold is slightly better than silver, but neither is dramatic.
- Your hair, eyes and skin are close in depth — nothing stands out sharply.
In the logic behind the free color analysis quiz, a warm undertone with low contrast leads to Soft Autumn. A neutral undertone with warm eyes (hazel, brown, green) leads there too. Cool grey or blue eyes with a neutral undertone point to Soft Summer.
Five color pairings that work
- Camel + ecru + olive — the Soft Autumn uniform.
- Terracotta + mocha — warm and quietly elegant.
- Sea green + khaki — fresh but still muted.
- Peach + taupe — soft and light.
- Olive + chocolate — a deeper option for autumn and winter.
Common mistakes
- Building the wardrobe on black and white “basics”.
- Picking saturated jewel tones (emerald, cobalt, fuchsia) as tops.
- Very cool, ashy hair color that drains your warmth.
- Heavy black eyeliner that adds contrast you don’t have.

How to check if you are a Soft Autumn at home
You don’t need professional drapes for a first check. Stand facing a window in daylight, without makeup, hair pulled back, wearing something neutral. Hold each pair of fabrics (tops, scarves, towels) under your chin one after the other and look at your skin, not at the fabric: are shadows softer, is the skin more even, do your eyes look clearer?
- Olive vs emerald: olive should look natural; emerald may look too strong.
- Ecru vs optical white: ecru should look soft; white may look harsh.
- Gold vs silver: gold should be slightly better, even if the difference is small.
If your answers keep pointing the same way, you have a strong hint. If they are mixed, take the free color analysis quiz — it combines your hair, eye and skin answers with three undertone tests, the same way the Closie app does.
