Summer
color palette

cool, soft and gentle — and three ways to wear it

Summers have cool coloring with low to medium contrast: ash-toned hair, pinkish or neutral skin, gray, blue or soft green eyes. They look best in colors with a cool base and a gentle finish — powder pink, lavender, sea green, navy — and harsh or overpowered in black, bright orange or mustard. Summer splits into three types.

Three seasons in this family

Light Summer

The lightest Summer. Cool pastels — powder pink, lavender, light blue, mint, off-white. Deep colors near the face overpower it.

→

Cool Summer

The coolest Summer, also called True Summer. Medium-intensity cool colors — navy, raspberry, cool gray, sea green.

→

Soft Summer

The softest Summer. Smoky, muted colors — taupe, powder pink, cool gray, sea green, plum. Bright and sharp colors overpower it.

What all Summers have in common

Summer colors are cool and slightly softened, as if seen through a light haze. They lean blue or pink rather than yellow. On a Summer they make the skin look even and calm. Warm, golden colors — mustard, orange, rust — tend to make Summer skin look sallow, and very high-contrast combinations like black with snow white can look severe.

Most Summers prefer silver or white gold, off-white instead of bright white, and navy, graphite or taupe instead of black. What separates the three Summers is how light the colors should be and how much clarity they can handle.

A quick test: compare raspberry with dusty rose under your chin. If raspberry looks great, lean toward Cool Summer. If dusty rose looks better and raspberry looks loud, lean toward Soft Summer. If both feel heavy and powder pink wins, try Light Summer.

Summer neutrals

  • Instead of black: navy, graphite or ink navy.
  • Instead of snow white: off-white or a soft optic white.
  • Instead of camel: cool taupe or mocha.
  • Denim: mid-blue and gray-blue washes work best.

Common Summer mistakes

  • Black as the safe choice. It’s rarely safe for a Summer near the face. Navy and graphite look just as polished.
  • Warm camel coats. A cool taupe or gray coat does the same job without the yellow cast.
  • Confusing Soft Summer with Soft Autumn. Both are muted, but Summer is cool. Silver vs gold near the face usually settles it.

Questions & answers

What colors suit a Summer?

Cool, soft colors: powder pink, lavender, light blue, sea green, navy, raspberry, cool gray and taupe. Light Summer wears the palest, Cool Summer the clearest, Soft Summer the most muted.

Is True Summer the same as Cool Summer?

Yes. Both names describe the coolest of the three Summers. We use Cool Summer, the name used in the Closie app.

Can a Summer wear black?

Away from the face, yes — pants, shoes, a bag. Near the face, navy or graphite usually look better.

Soft Summer or Soft Autumn?

Both wear muted colors with low contrast. Soft Summer is cool and looks better in silver and cool gray; Soft Autumn is warm and looks better in gold, olive and camel.
